Hunting Supplies & Gear

TL;DR: Field gear for the hunt itself, everything except the gun and ammo. Cameras for scouting, calls and decoys to bring animals in, then camo, lights and packs to carry it all.

Build the rest of the kit

A hunting pack is mostly the same short list every season. Glass to find the animal (Binoculars, Range Finders), a blade to deal with it (Hunting Knives), and the right load for the game (Rifle Ammunition for deer and hogs, Shotgun Shells for birds). Still shopping for the rifle? Most deer hunters start in Bolt Action Rifles.

Hunting Supplies & Gear FAQ

Cellular or standard trail camera?

A standard camera saves photos to an SD card you pull by hand. A cellular camera sends photos to your phone over a data plan, which costs a monthly fee but means fewer trips in that leave scent behind.

Are trail cameras legal everywhere?

Not everywhere. A few states restrict them on public land or during hunting seasons. Check your state wildlife agency's rules before you hang one.

Can I use an electronic call?

Depends on the game. Federal rules bar electronic calls for most migratory bird hunting, and states set their own rules for turkey, deer and predators. Mouth and box calls are legal nearly everywhere.

What should be in a basic deer hunting pack?

A knife, a headlamp with spare batteries, a rangefinder or binoculars, a call, drag rope, gloves and water. Most of it is on this page or one click away.
