Gold finishes, side by side
| Finish | What it looks like | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Polished or plated gold | Mirror gold across the slide and frame | The loudest option in the case. It shows fingerprints, so keep a soft cloth nearby. |
| Engraved gold | Gold finish with scrollwork cut into the slide and frame | Often paired with pearl-style or wood grips. |
| Coated gold | A satin to bright gold from a hard coating such as Cerakote, PVD or titanium nitride | Made to stand up to handling and cleaning, which suits a gold gun that actually gets shot. |
| Two-tone | Gold frames, slides or engraving set against black, chrome or titanium | Where the black and gold and the silver and gold looks live. |
Brands like Iver Johnson, Girsan, Chiappa and Dickinson, with more added as new models come in.

Gold 1911 FAQ
Is a gold 1911 made of gold?
No. The gun is steel, and the gold is a thin plating or a coating such as PVD, titanium nitride or Cerakote. A 24K finish means the plating is 24 karat gold, applied in a thin layer over the steel.
How do I keep a gold finish looking right?
Wipe it down with a soft cloth after handling, skip abrasive polishes and steel brushes on the outside, and check the maker's manual for which cleaners are safe on that finish.
Does a gold 1911 shoot any differently?
No. The finish is cosmetic. Caliber, barrel length, sights and trigger are what change how a 1911 shoots.
