Pick the optic by distance
Start with how far you actually shoot, then pick the glass. Most people buy more magnification than they use.
| Optic | Where it fits |
|---|---|
| Red dot or reflex sight | Handguns, home defense rifles and shotguns, anything inside 100 yards where speed matters most |
| Low power variable (1-6x, 1-8x) | AR-15s that need to work up close and still reach out |
| Hunting scope (3-9x, 4-12x) | Deer and hog rifles at ordinary hunting ranges |
| High magnification (5-25x and up) | Precision rifles, long range targets, varmints |
| Thermal or night vision | Hog and predator hunting after dark, where your state allows it |
Mounting hardware
A good scope on bad rings shoots like a bad scope. Match ring diameter to the scope tube (1 inch, 30mm and 34mm are the common sizes) and pick a ring height that clears the front lens. Pistol red dots follow a footprint, so the optic has to match the slide cut or an adapter plate.

Scopes, Sights & Optics FAQ
What does 3-9x40 mean on a scope?
The first two numbers are the magnification range, so 3x at the low end and 9x at the high end. The last number is the objective (front) lens diameter in millimeters. A bigger objective gathers more light but usually needs taller rings.
Red dot or scope for an AR-15?
A red dot is faster up close and works with both eyes open. A low power variable scope covers close range at 1x and still gives you magnification for longer shots. Many shooters run a red dot with a flip-to-side magnifier as a middle ground, see Sight Magnifiers.
What size scope rings do I need?
Ring diameter has to match the scope's main tube, and ring height has to let the objective lens clear the barrel with a little gap. The scope's own listing gives the tube size. Shop Scope Rings.
Thermal or night vision?
Thermal reads heat, so it works in total darkness and makes animals stand out against cover. Night vision amplifies the light that is already there and shows a more natural, detailed image. Night hunting rules vary by state and species, so check yours before you buy for it.
Can I put a red dot on my pistol?
Yes if the slide is optics-ready or you add a mounting plate. The optic's footprint has to match the cut or the plate. Shop Red Dots Sights and Red Dot Mounts.
